Lenne Chai photographed icon of the moment Jennifer Coolidge for the cover of W Magazine’s VOLUME TWO: THE DIRECTOR’S ISSUE. Directed by Daniels, known for the films Everything Everywhere All At Once and Swiss Army Man, Lenne’s shoot pays homage to the genre of campy Japanese cinema tokusatsu that birthed legendary creatures like Godzilla, Mothra, and Giant Robo. To honor the genre’s tradition of heavily relying on handmade practical effects, Lenne created all of the images using in-camera trickery and forced perspectives. Director Daniel Scheinert even donned a “crustacean-couture” ensemble to play the nemesis of cover star Jennifer Coolidge.
Lenne first photographed the Daniels during their press tour, and after connecting creatively, they invited her to collaborate again on this truly one-of-a-kind project. Originally from Singapore, Lenne’s previous work creating striking visuals, surreal scenes, and celebrity covers made her a natural choice to shoot “Jennifer Coolidge vs. Haute Squad 5: Attack on Neo Runway City—Jennifer Reborn.” W Magazine used Lenne’s images for the cover of the issue and a spread with the article, and after their release, fans of both the Daniels and Jennifer Coolidge went crazy over the images on social media.
